Fr. Gregoire Fluet, Vice President for Mission and Ministry, recently added another title to his impressive résumé: Saint Bernard High School Athletics Hall of Famer.

Fr. Fluet served as both Chaplain and a Religion teacher at Saint Bernard High School, located in Uncasville, Conn., from 1984 to 1989. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his endless support of the school’s athletics teams.

“It was a tremendous honor to be remembered after so many years – over 35 – and to see the old faculty and alumni,” said Fr. Fluet. “Really, it was humbling.”

During his tenure at the high school, Fr. Fluet quickly became a fan of the Saints’ teams. He attended most games, offered Masses for the various teams, and supported the coaches and staff in numerous ways.

Fr. Fluet’s love of the Mount’s sports teams has become legendary on campus over the years. For those who know him – or have heard him cheering at games – it comes as no surprise that his enthusiasm for the Saint Bernard High School teams is still well-remembered even decades later.

Sports are about more than just physical activity and a love of the game, notes Fr. Fluet.

“Incredible life lessons are learned through athletics and athletics can play a valuable part in ministry and the spiritual life,” he said. “Pope Benedict XVI taught that sports can help to foster basic virtues and values and that athletes can be true models of life well lived.”

Fr. Fluet was ordained a priest in 1982, and has an MDiv and an MA (Theology, Church History) from St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Mass. He also has an MA (American History) and a PhD (History) from Clark University.
