Looking Back: Surfing into the cyber-century!

In the 1990s, the World Wide Web felt like a boundless frontier of optimism and community connection. It was against this backdrop that Mount Saint Mary College navigated the turn of the millennium, celebrating a watershed moment for its digital presence right at the cusp of the year 2000.

The college first ventured into cyberspace in the fall of 1996, but by the late 1990s, it was time for an upgrade. In just three short years, the landscape of the web had changed tremendously: Netflix and eBay burst onto the scene in 1997 and Google unveiled their search engine in 1998.

On November 17, 1999 – just in time for Y2K – the Mount launched a redesigned web portal at www.msmc.edu. The college completely reorganized the platform, introducing a consistent new aesthetic, revised navigation, and a handy site index designed to make surfing the Mount easier and more productive than ever. The fresh interface featured expanded content for alumni affairs, updated academic directories, and a streamlined layout built for the future.

Optimized for Microsoft Internet Explorer, the new site proudly showcased a collage of Mount life, featuring student hangouts, scenic campus views, and a high-flying shot from a Mount Knights basketball game.
