Passing the Torch: McLeod named Head Women’s Basketball coach

Change is coming to the Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball program, but don't expect the Knights to miss a beat.
Following a stellar three-year run that culminated in a 2024–25 Skyline Conference Championship and a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament, Head Coach Marion Dietz is trading the Mount for St. Bonaventure University.
But Samantha Howe, the college’s Director of Athletics, found the perfect successor right on her own bench. Geary McLeod, formerly the assistant coach, has officially been elevated to head coach, becoming the fifth leader in the program’s history. For a team coming off three consecutive winning seasons, the promotion offers something invaluable: continuity.
“Geary has been a part of the program for the past three years, playing an integral role in its growth and success,” Howe explained. “We are confident in his vision to build upon the strong foundation established and continue moving the program forward.”
Taking the reins
McLeod is far from a stranger to the Knights' roster. Over the last three seasons, he has been a foundational pillar of the program, quietly developing All-Conference talent and fostering a locker room culture built on accountability and excellence.
For McLeod, the new role is both an honor and a seamless transition.
“The Mount is a special place, and I'm incredibly honored and thankful,” McLeod said, expressing gratitude to Howe and the administration. He was also quick to credit his predecessor. “I want to thank Coach Dietz for her leadership, the impact she has had on this program, and everything we accomplished over the past three years. I wish her all the best as she begins her next chapter.”
As McLeod steps into the spotlight, his blueprint for the future relies on a familiar formula, elevated by personal faith and competitive drive.
“I look forward to serving our student-athletes and building a culture rooted in faith, accountability, togetherness, and competitive excellence,” he added. “I give all glory to God for His grace and guidance, and I’m excited to get to work with our players, staff, alumni, and supporters.”
A Farewell to Dietz
While the Knights look forward, the campus community is also taking a moment to celebrate Dietz’s lasting impact. In her three seasons at the helm, she re-established Mount Saint Mary College as a regional powerhouse, leaving behind a culture of winning that will benefit the college for years to come.
“Her leadership, passion, and commitment to the women’s basketball team and Mount Athletics have made a lasting impact,” Howe noted. “While she will be greatly missed, we are excited to see all that she accomplishes in her new role.”
With a championship blueprint already in hand and a familiar face drawing up the plays, the next chapter of Mount Saint Mary College’s women’s basketball looks just as bright as the last.
