Students join annual Take Back the Night campaign

The Mount Saint Mary College community hosted its annual Take Back the Night campaign in April.

Students, faculty, and staff gathered in the Elaine and William Kaplan Recreation Center before walking in solidarity across campus. The group carried candles to honor survivors of sexual violence and to express support as these survivors continue their healing journey.

Take Back the Night is a nationwide event that takes place at college campuses to raise awareness to end sexual violence in all forms, including assault, abuse, trafficking, stalking, gender harassment, and relationship violence.

The walk included student-created imagery from the Clothesline Project, which is another national campaign aimed at ending violence and abuse. Throughout the month, students wrote messages of encouragement to survivors on t-shirts. The t-shirt display was featured on campus throughout the month of April.

Mount hosts pop-up petting zoo

It felt less like the Mount and more like a farm recently when the college hosted a lively pop-up petting zoo for students and faculty.

Held on the lawn near Hudson Hall, the event provided a unique opportunity for the campus community to interact with a variety of farm animals in an open, relaxed environment.

The athletic fields and courtyards were occupied by an array of friendly visitors, including goats, a dairy cow, a heritage turkey, and several dozen newly hatched chicks. Students enjoyed taking a break from their busy academic schedules to pet the animals, take selfies, and learn about the different species from on-site handlers.

The pop-up petting zoo is part of the college's ongoing commitment to student well-being and community building. By providing diverse and engaging activities, Mount Saint Mary College continues to foster a supportive environment for its student body.

Block Party turns campus into a carnival

From carnival rides to county fair vibes, Mount students gathered in April for a day of celebration at the annual Student Government Association (SGA) Block Party.

Held in the Sakac Hall parking lot, the event provided the campus community with an opportunity to celebrate and de-stress as the academic year neared its conclusion.

The afternoon’s entertainment began with a live performance by the Ryan Townsend Live Band, followed by a set from DJ AKR. Throughout the day, attendees engaged in a variety of high-energy activities, including a bumper car arena, a dunk tank, and various carnival games. The event also featured a photobooth, name painting, and a pie-eating contest.

The Block Party is a long-standing tradition at the Mount, organized by the SGA to offer co-curricular activities at low or no cost to undergraduate students. In addition to the attractions, students enjoyed refreshments from local food trucks and received commemorative free T-shirts.
