Mount Saint Mary College hosted the inaugural Student-Athlete Leadership Conference, with the theme “Leadership and the Importance of Student Voice,” in November of 2024.
Presented by the Mount, the Mid-Hudson School Study Council, and the New York State public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Section I and IX, the conference promoted the development and growth of Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs) in the Hudson Valley.
SAACs are groups of student-athletes who provide input on issues that affect their athletic experience as well as the policies that impact them. SAACs also promote a sense of community among student-athletes and encourage their involvement in campus and community activities.
Trevor Purcell, Head Baseball Coach at the Mount, hosted a talk titled “How to Grow Student Voice.” The session provided examples of how Mount student-athletes play a pivotal role on campus in a variety of ways, both on and off the field. This includes community service, leadership opportunities, and the overall impact of being a well-rounded Division III student-athlete.
In addition, Mount SAAC leaders provided insight into the experiences, policies, and rules that impact their lives on campus. The speakers included SAAC president Peyton Curley, vice president Liz Petrellese, social media manager Ava DiScala, and volleyball coach Skylar Kellam.
