All treats, no tricks for Bishop Dunn students on Halloween

Children from Bishop Dunn Memorial School donned their Halloween costumes and went trick-or-treating – with a little help from the Mount’s athletics teams – on Friday, October 31.

Parents of Bishop Dunn students filled the school’s gymnasium with a variety of themed tables, from films like K-Pop Demon Hunters to Monsters, Inc., and everything in-between. Parents handed out candy in full costume, including characters from Wicked, classic ghosts and goblins, and even Amy Rose from Sonic the Hedgehog, complete with inflatable hammer.

Outside on the basketball court, the late October chill didn’t stop Mount athletes from each of the college’s 20-plus teams from handing out candy to Bishop Dunn students.

The young students went from station to station, collecting candy and showing off their costumes. Mount student-athletes and coaches, Bishop Dunn faculty, and parents cooperated to bring the event to life.

Bishop Dunn, on the Mount campus, was founded in 1883. The school is committed to the academic, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical development of children, pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

Bishop Dunn raises $18,500 at annual Cupcake Run

Bishop Dunn saw a sweet turnout for its 7th Annual Cupcake 5k hosted on the Mount campus in September.

The event raised $18,500 for BDMS student scholarships.

More than 240 participants took part in the Hudson Valley’s sweetest race, including Mount President Dr. Robert Gervasi, and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Evan Merkhofer. Vice President for Mission and Ministry and Campus Chaplain, Fr. Gregorie Fluet, was also in attendance, cheering on the runners.

The day kicked off with a Mini Cupcake Run for children 10 and under, followed by the main 5k run/walk. And as the name suggests, there were plenty of cupcakes to be enjoyed after the race.

Thirty local businesses and several student groups chipped in to make the day a success. These volunteers include the Mount’s Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, Mount nursing students, and the college’s track and field team. Skywalker and the team at K104.7 also set the tone with games, music, and more. The combined effort between the Mount and BDMS highlights a long-standing and vital relationship between the schools.

BDMS principal, Nancy Benfer, addressed the significance of this partnership, saying, “It’s not just our families at Bishop Dunn, but it’s the entire Newburgh [and] Mount Saint Mary College community that come together to support this event. And it’s all about scholarships for the kids.”

Assistant principal Melissa Broe added, “I look forward to meeting all the families, all the students, [and] potential students…and watching the kids have fun.”

Freshmen dig in to help Bishop Dunn students

Mount freshmen recently got their hands dirty for a good cause, helping students from Bishop Dunn Memorial School plant cheerful mums in the Sensory Garden.

The collaborative event was part of the college’s First-Year Experience (FYE) program, designed to help new students acclimate to campus life and the local community.

The Sensory Garden is a unique outdoor learning space: a green classroom that serves students from pre-kindergarten to college at both the Mount and Bishop Dunn.

The recent planting session fostered a fun, hands-on opportunity for the older students to mentor the younger ones, all while beautifying the campus.

This event is just one of many ways the two schools work together. Mount Education students often do fieldwork at the school, benefiting from the guidance of seasoned Bishop Dunn faculty.
