Mime’s the word
Early in the history of Mount Saint Mary College, the likes of legendary comedian Bob Hope, the U.S. premiere of The Dialogue of the Carmelites, and jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie drew hundreds to the Aquinas Hall Theatre.
But it wasn’t any of those acts who packed the house the evening of Monday, April 9, 1973. It was Marcel Marceau: The Wordless Wonder, The Genius of Gesture, The World’s Greatest Mime.
The April 12, 1973 issue of the Mount’s student paper, at that time called The Mount Myriad, reported that the theatre was filled with an audience 1,200 spectators strong.
“These viewers found Marcel Marceau to be both incomparable and brilliant in his field,” states the article.
Marceau, the article concludes, “had to be booked a whole year in advance to make this performance possible.”
That’s one popular mime.
