‘Mount Magazine’ earns pair of Catholic Media awards

Mount Saint Mary College Magazine earned two St. Juan Diego Collegiate Awards from the Catholic Media Association, in recognition of journalistic excellence.

The winners were selected from 100 entries in various categories, including design, writing, photography, broadcast, and digital media. 

“On the Road Again” earned first place in the Alumni Magazine Division for “Best Story and Photo Package by Two Individuals or More.” The story focused on alumna Taylor Walton ’15 and her passion for photography while traveling and working remotely. Another story, “Our Newest Entrepreneurs,” earned second place in the Alumni Magazine Division for “Best Feature Article.” It focused on four alumni-owned businesses, including a Catholic marketing and creative agency, a juice bar, a bookstore, and an ice cream shop. Becker wins a Telly

Merle Becker, instructor of Digital Media Production.

Merle Becker, instructor of Digital Media Production, earned a Telly Award for her YouTube channel, “DIY Film with Merle Becker.”

Becker’s channel was awarded a silver Telly in the Social Media: Instructional category. Her YouTube channel features short how-to videos about filmmaking, with a new video premiering every other week. The channel can be viewed at diyfilmwithmerlebecker.com.  

The Telly Awards is an annual competition honoring excellence in video and television. This year’s television winners included NBC, PBS, and MSNBC. Online winners included Sesame Workshop, BET, Insider, and MTV.

Becker began her career in television in the late ’90s by serving as one of the producers on MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head. She went on to help launch several other successful shows for MTV, including Daria, Cartoon Sushi, and Station Zero. Later, Becker would form her own company, Freakfilms, Inc.

MSMC’s advertising excellence

Mount Saint Mary College earned a pair of accolades from College Advertising Awards (CAA), which recognizes excellence in marketing and advertising in the field of higher education.

Two of the college’s in-house projects, a social media marketing campaign “What Will the Mount Spark in You?” and a printed “Be the Spark” brochure series, were named among the top in the nation in the 2022 Collegiate Advertising Awards Program. 

The Mount’s entries received silver awards, placing them in the top 12 percent of the nation for advertising excellence. Judging criteria included creativity, layout and design, functionality, message effectiveness, production quality, and overall appeal.

CAA is a national program recognizing higher education organizations for excellence in communications, marketing, advertising, and promotions of their schools. The 2022 CAA program received entries from the United States and Canada representing everything from small community colleges to very large schools and universities.

Matt Frey ’05 MSEd ’10

After receiving his bachelor’s and MSEd degrees at Mount Saint Mary College, Matt worked for the Mid Hudson Times as a reporter before returning to his alma mater as Director of Media Relations in 2012.
