Philosophy, Theology majors debut

Since the Mount was founded, Philosophy and Theology have played an integral role in our academic presence. In fact, the college’s roots in education, and of educators, go even further back to the 13th century and Saint Dominic.

In recognition, the Division of Humanities recently added two new programs to the college’s list of majors: Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies, both of which were originally available as minors at the college. With these new additions, students have the opportunity to have open, real conversations about theology and philosophy, culture, history, diverse issues within the field, and their place in the world.

At the Mount, Philosophy majors will investigate the core areas of metaphysics (the study of reality), epistemology (the study of knowledge), ethics, and logic before furthering their studies through advanced courses in one of several defined tracks.

Along with the insights gained from examining these issues, Philosophy students’ studies will aid in the development of communication, interdisciplinary, and problem-solving skills necessary for a student’s education, and preparation beyond the classroom.

To complement the Philosophy major, the new major of Theology and Religious Studies offers an outlet for creative thought and the knowledge of God and topics of faith.

Students will put into conversation varying topics of scripture, systematics, and spirituality, allowing them to take part in experiential learning: opportunities outside the classroom that include service experience, internships, and retreats. Along with the insights gained from examining varying aspects of faith, Theology and Religious Studies students will gain deductive, critical thinking, and language skills that will give them a broader appreciation of religion in general for personal study and reflection.

Both majors will allow students to connect with the college’s Dominican heritage and the emphasis on seeking truth.

New Cybersecurity AAS to BA with SUNY Orange

The Mount has also recently announced an articulation agreement where students can begin their Cybersecurity training at SUNY Orange and finish at the Mount, ultimately yielding a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity.

SUNY Orange students who have completed an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Cybersecurity and have earned grades of C or better in all required courses will be guaranteed admission into the Mount’s Cybersecurity program with full junior status, and will complete four consecutive semesters at the Mount.

“The Mount is excited to partner with SUNY Orange and offer this new option to area students,” Dr. Jason N. Adsit, president of the Mount, explained. “This program will help skilled scholars to jumpstart their Cybersecurity career. With robust internship opportunities and plenty of professional connections to be made here at the Mount, Cybersecurity graduates will be well-prepared in their field and enjoy career options in the Hudson Valley and beyond.”
